Big project at the moment
I’m currently focused on finishing the painting of Feyre and Nyx. Over the past few months, I’ve developed a new style that leans more into loose, expressive brushstrokes. Before, I primarily worked with a soft, fuzzy brush, but this new approach gives the painting a more dynamic feel without looking too washed out.

Loose sketch
For the most part, I try to start my paintings with a loose sketch.
Those first strokes hold so much potential, bringing life and gesture to a pose or a landscape.
Capturing that raw energy in later stages can often be nerve-wracking and almost impossible.
Here it’s where the magic begins.
First Values
Often, I rely on values to map out the basic shapes of a painting first.
It’s the most effective and reliable technique for experimenting with lighting.
I especially love this stage:
it’s the sweet spot between this loose energy of the initial sketch and the refinement of larger volumes and depth.
There truly the painting begins to take shape.
Modelling
This phase focuses on building an even level of detail, introducing colors and textures into the painting.
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with my workflow by combining this step with the previous one. This allows me to incorporate more textured and expressive brushwork earlier in the process.
I’m also focusing on defining medium shapes to enhance the overall readability of the composition
Detailing
To be honest, this phase is the one I feel the most uncertain about.
It’s crucial to be constantly mindful of every stroke during this stage. There’s a fine line between too much and too little
- knowing how much detail is needed for clarity, without overwhelming the viewer with noise.
I’m always studying this area, striving to create more beautifully detailed artwork that strikes the perfect balance..
